In a first in South Tamil Nadu, Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC) performed the Endoscopic procedure for Weight reduction. This Non-Surgical Endoscopic Procedure known as “Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty” was done to treat a 44-year-old man from Madurai who was diagnosed to have Morbid Obesity with Sleep Apnea.

Due to an obesogenic environment and an overemphasis on low-fat eating, which leads to an excessive intake of simple carbohydrates and sugar, obesity has become widespread. Effects are greater for women owing to their smaller size and extra weight gain with each pregnancy, with majority of the adult women being obese. They are more likely to miscarry, less likely to become pregnant spontaneously or through fertility treatments, and more likely to suffer preterm birth and other pregnancy issues.

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty has created room for obese patients, especially those with Intermediate BMI (27.5 to 37.5) when there were few options for weight loss treatments. In some circumstances, this treatment can also be used on people with higher BMIs >40 kg/m2. With the procedure’s uniqueness added, obese patients with a BMI of 27.5 to 37.5 Kg/m2 are the greatest contenders.
