Department of Fetal Medicine

Fetal medicine is a branch of medicine that focuses on managing health concerns of the mother and fetus prior to, during, and shortly after pregnancy.

We have a team of obstetricians, pediatric surgeons, interventional radiologists, haematologists, anaesthetists, midwives, radiologists, psychologists, who help in bringing down the complications while delivering babies.

At our fetal medicine unit, both the mother and the fetus get specialized care where high-risk pregnancies are converted into normal pregnancies.

Our well-trained competent teams of professionals can co-ordinate pregnancy-related issues with all expertise put together, providing total and absolute care.

There are many reasons why women experience complications during pregnancy. These reasons caused by medical and surgical disorders include,

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Pre-eclampsia (toxaemia)
  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Kidney disease
  • Gastrointestinal disease
  • Infectious diseases

Healthy women may also need to see an MFM sub-specialist.

  • Pregnant with multiple babies (twins, triplets, or more)
  • Recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Suspected fetal growth restriction (baby not growing properly)
  • Evidence of possible birth defects
  • Ultrasonography
  • OBG
  • Routine Antenatal Scanning
  • 1st Trimester Dating Scan
  • 11-13 weeks NT Scan (for Down Syndrome risk assessment)
  • 20-22 weeks anomaly scan – TIFFA (Targeted Imaging for Fetal Anomalies)
  • 3rd Trimester growth scan
  • Fetal Doppler evaluation
  • Fetal echocardiogram
  • Antenatal surveillance of Rh-ve (ICT +ve) sensitized pregnancy
  • 3D/4D Fetal Scans

Gynaec:

  • Pelvic Ultrasound 2D
  • Pelvic Ultrasound 3D
  • Saline Infusion Sonohysterogram 2D/3D

Procedures:

  • Amniocentesis / CVS
  • Fetal Blood Sampling
  • Fetal Reduction including RFA for MCDA twins
  • Amnioreduction
  • Intrauterine transfusion

Genetic Counseling:

  • Pre-test and post-test counselling for double/triple marker screening

Milestones:

A total of 321 Fetal medicine interventions have been performed so far.

  • 153 Amniocentesis

  • 80 Selective fetal reduction
  • 10 Radio Frequency Ablations
  • 14 Intrauterine transfusions
