On the sidelines of World Diabetes Day, observed on November 14 every year. Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC) launched of Diabetic Home Care package of the Hospital. The package offers consultations and services of diabetologists, physicians, specialists, physiotherapists, dieticians, and paramedical staff at the patient residence.
Hospital Consultant Diabetologist Dr. C. R. Mahesh Babu addressed media persons on protecting diabetic patients during the pandemic and said that over 70 percent of the people who succumbed to Covid-19 in India either had diabetes or both diabetes and hypertension,” it is estimated that about 50 percent of the diabetic patients who died of Covid-19 had poorly managed diabetes.
For these reasons, keeping diabetes under control is the best healthcare strategy for diabetic patients during the pandemic, he added.
Citing several reports, Dr. Babu pointed out Covid-19 was found to have the potential to induce diabetes in healthy people due to the intensive steroid therapy given to the Covid-19 patients to modulate the immune system and urged the public to strictly follow respiratorily and hand hygiene, social distancing to protect themselves from the infection.
