Among the five million people suffering from cardiovascular diseases in India. Ischemia accounts for the most number of heart diseases owing to unhealthy lifestyles. said cardiologists Dr. R Sivakumar, Dr. S Selvamani and Dr. Ganeshan at the Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre on Sunday. Ischemia is damage or disease in the heart’s main blood vessels (arteries). The doctors said that one in two heart patients die every year which can be avoided if necessary precautions are taken. Risk factors include hypertension, diabetes, obesity, lack of physical activity and lipid abnormalities. Rising life expectancy has resulted in an aging population with cardiovascular problems like heart failure, heart rhythm abnormalities and valve malfunction. They highlighted the importance of giving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training to policemen, college students and family members of patients of heart diseases. “CPR can be a lifesaver in emergencies when someone’s breathing or heartbeat has stopped. This simple procedure can double or triple the chances of survival after cardiac arrest,” the doctors said.
