Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC) here announced the launch of a Joints and Sports Injuries Centre on Friday. Doctors specialising in sports medicine and joint care will assist sportspersons in post-operative rehabilitation at the centre and ensure that they avoid future injuries. U.T. Vassan, Head, Department Orthopaedics, said, “Most Western countries have a separate department for treating sports injuries. With advancements in orthopaedics, only people who are trained in the relevant sub-specialty will have adequate experience in dealing with these injuries.”

He added that joint conservation was also a major priority for doctors. Young people with joint problems were unable to carry out daily activities due to pain, he said. “We try to preserve the joint by using the latest techniques and also by correcting deformities and re-placing only part of the affected joint,” he added. Consultants Naresh Dhanakodi and Prabu Vairavan said that people participating in activities like jogging, running and exercising were looking for specialized care and treatment. “The centre will provide solutions to problems in the meniscus and ligaments, shoulder dislocation and treat tendon problems like tendonitis and hamstring muscle injuries,” they added.
