Department of Fetal Medicine

Fetal medicine is a branch of medicine that focuses on managing health concerns of the mother and fetus prior to, during and shortly after pregnancy. We have a team of obstetricians, pediatric surgeons, interventional radiologists, hematologists, anesthetists, midwives, radiologists, psychologists, who help in bringing down the complications while delivering babies. At this unit, both the mother and the fetus get specialized care where high-risk pregnancies are converted into normal pregnancies. Our well-trained competent teams of professionals can co-ordinate pregnancy-related issues with all expertise put together, providing total and absolute care.

Maternal – Fetal Medicine:

  • We offer routine first trimester screening in the detection of aneuploidy, early detection of major fetal anomalies and pregnancy complications through serum screening, NIPT and ultra sonography at around 12 weeks of gestational age with double marker and extended double marker tests. We also offer second trimester screening targeted at fetal anomalies and aneuploidies.
  • Screen positive mothers are offered invasive diagnostic procedures like chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis and cordocentesis as required. Genetic testing as appropriate – Karyotyping, FISH, QF-PCR, CMA, WES – is offered. We also suggest fetal autopsy for indicated cases. In case of abnormal results, couples are given detailed empathic counseling and offered safe termination with informed choice.
  • Selective Fetal Reduction procedures are available for higher order pregnancies. In case of Monochorionic twins, Radiofrequency ablation is done. In case of fetal anemia and hydrops due to Rh iso- immunisation or fetal infection, intrauterine transfusion is done.
  • We provide a dedicated fetal surveillance protocol involving serial Doppler studies, Biophysical profile and Cardiotocography for small for gestational age fetuses, fetuses with severe oligohydramnios and mothers with high risk pregnancies to plan the ideal time and mode of delivery, hence optimizing the maternal and fetal outcome.
  • Cervical length assessment is being done routinely for all our pregnant mothers between 12 and 20 weeks. We offer encerclage through vaginal, abdominal and laparoscopic routes, both history and ultrasound-indicated for women at risk of preterm labor.
