The Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre has become south Tamil Nadu’s first international training centre for life support training, accredited by American Heart Association (AHA). It will train medical and nonmedical professionals in basic and advanced life support for adults and children suffering from heart and brain ailments. “AHA is a global leader in resuscitation training and its techniques are standardised globally. We have seven staff trained in life support techniques, who will train others.Anyone who undergoes the training will be given a certificate. Training people in emergency life-saving courses will help reduce instances of out of hospital deaths.,” said S. Gurushankar, Chairman, MMHRC.

Due to lack of awareness of first aid to be taken in case of heart attack, cardiac arrest or stroke, patients do not reach hospitals in time leading to loss of life. The training will teach people to identify symptoms of heart attacks and strokes, and techniques to stabilise patients so that he or she can buy more time to reach hospital. Delay in identifying symptoms leads to wastage of time, which is crucial in saving a patient in such cases, he said.

Dr. Narendra Nath Jena, Director and HOD, Institute of Emergency Medicine, Meenakshi Mission Hospital, said timely intervention by trained personnel would ensure better survival rate. “We will be training public including college students and the police so that they could save lives. The training will be on how to provide first aid and CPRAED (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Automated External Defibrillator) and the high quality hands-on training will be provided. The basic life support training is for a day and the advanced and paediatric life support courses are for two days,” he said.
