In a historic achievement for cardiology in Rest of Tamil Nadu, Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre has performed the first-ever LAMPOON-assisted TMVR procedure. This advanced catheter-based technique facilitates the dilation or laceration of a previously implanted mitral valve, enabling its replacement with a new one. The surgery was done on a 75-year-old banker, who had undergone an open-heart surgery ten years ago for mitral valve replacement.
The 75-year-old patient required replacement of the previously implanted mitral valve, as its quality deteriorated. Transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) emerges as a boon for patients who need a new mitral valve, but are above 65 years and have comorbidities or previous cardiac interventions.
