Homemaker becomes ray of hope for 7 people

Ensuring a new lease of life to seven persons, the organs of a 23-year old homemaker from Madurai, who was declared brain dead at Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC), were donated on Sunday.

According to a statement issued by the Hospital, K. Karthika, a resident of Arapalayam, experienced severe headaches while at home on September 30. She was rushed to a private hospital nearby and was later shifted to MMHRC, Early on Sunday morning, she was declared brain dead. After her husband Kasi gave consent for organ donation, her organs were harvested by the doctors. While one of her kidneys, and her liver were transplanted on patients under treatment at MMHRC, the other kidney was received by a private hospital in Tiruchy. Karthika’s heart and lungs were airlifted and sent to a private hospital in Chennai. Meanwhile, her eyes were donated to the Aravind Eye Hospital. The hospital management thanked the police for facilitating hassle-free transportation of the organs.
