Experts at Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre saved the life of a 17-year old boy, an assault victim, and fully restored his facial appearance and motor functions through multiple emergency surgeries lasting over eight hours. After spending about five days in intensive care following the surgeries, the boy left the hospital fully healed and without a single scar in his face.
The boy from Kamuthi, a second year B.Com student, sustained grave injuries when a known person assaulted him with a sharp weapon, and was rushed to the hospital recently with severe facial disfigurement due to multiple deep cut injuries in the face and the neck with exposed muscles, bone and trachea. The condition of the patient was critical, as profuse blood loss and airway obstruction could lead to hypovolemic shock any moment, an emergency state in which the body’s tissues and organs do not receive enough oxygen and nutrients to function properly.
However, multiple emergency surgeries that lasted over eight hours, performed with the close coordination of experts from multiple disciplines, saved the victim’s life and restored his appearance and facial functions. The team comprised experts from the departments of: plastic surgery, dental surgery, neurosurgery, ENT, vascular surgery, general surgery, orthopaedics, and anaesthesia.
