The Rotary Club of Kumbakonam Temple City presented the “Maruthuva Chemmall” award to Dr S Gurushankar, Chairman, Meenakshi Hospital & Research Centre, Madurai. He was conferred with the award in recognition of his achievements and in appreciation of services to the community in the field of healthcare. Dr S Gurushankar said, “I am grateful to Rotary Club of Kumbakonam Temple City for awarding me this title. As an institution, we believe that access to affordable healthcare is a basic human right and every citizen should get access to high quality treatment. We have a long journey ahead towards improving the healthcare scene.” Dr S Gurushankar is a successful entrepreneur. He established the 250-bed Meenakshi Hospital at Thanjavur five years ago which has been a success since then. Dr Gurushankar straddles charity, patient-centric service and organisational growth with ease. Following his passion for philanthropy, he oversaw the successful completion of over 150 free heart surgeries, and has successfully crossed the milestone of saving 1,000 children from cancer by providing treatment free of cost. Since 2010, he has been running India’s only free-treatment program for children with cancer at MMHRC’s dedicated Pediatric Oncology Centre. Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre in Madurai has completed 11,000 free cleft-lip and palate surgeries. They operate eight telemedicine centres in rural areas in and around Madurai. A telemedicine system installed in each of these centres along with a trained technician will guide people in using the facility for free. MMHRC Hospital Centre has provided care, understanding and support to over 1000 patients fighting illnesses like Cancer, Alzheimers’, AIDS and Renal failure.Dr.S.Gurushankar has recently ventured into nursing education with his Meenakshi College of Nursing. Dr S Gurushankar has had his management training from IIM Bangalore and Harvard Business School. Dr S Gurushankar is the Co-Chairman of CII Healthcare Panel of TN, He is the present state president of Tamil Nadu Chapter of the Association of Healthcare Providers (India).
