Chronic Kidney Disease – A Silent Killer

Advanced treatment for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is expensive thus, Preventive health measures are the best way to tackle it, said the Head of Department of Urology at Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC) Dr. R. Ravichandran

On the occasion of World Kidney Day, doctors at MMHRC discussed the alarming rise of CKD and its measures on Thursday. Head of the Department of Nephrology Dr Sampathkumar said,”Diabetes and hypertension are major causes for CKD. Nearly 30 percent of patients with diabetes develop the disease, and Tamil Nadu the highest number of diabetic patients in the country. Control of blood sugar and blood pressure is vital for long term kidney health.”

“According to the Indian CKD registry, Tamil Nadu has nearly 75,000 CKD patients with around 25,000 of them requiring advanced care every year.” Said Dr Ravichandran adding that a healthy diet, reduced salt intake, regular exercise and intake of atleast 2 to 2.5 litre of water everyday is key preventive measure for CKD and other kidney ailments
