Quoting a study, Senior Consultant of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Meenakshi Mission Hospital ,Dr R M Krishnan ,said that more than half of the deaths due to cardiovascular diseases in India in 2016 were among those who aged less than 50. He also mentioned that early diagnosis and treatment would reduce the associated mortality from 40% to less than 5%. On the sidelines of World Heart Day that is to be celebrated on September 29, cardiologists at Meenakshi Mission Hospital said that cardiovascular diseases emerged as the number one cause of death, accounting for 31 percent of all deaths globally, most of them due to heart attack and stroke. Quoting a study published in the medical journal, ‘The Lancet’, Dr Krishnan said that the onset of cardiovascular diseases among Indians was at least a decade earlier than those in the Western World. Senior Consultant Cardiologist Dr Selvamani said that abstinence from tobacco, reduction of salt in the diet, consumption of more fruits and vegetables, regular physical activity would help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
