Life is sweeter with better diabetes management.
The Department of Diabetology at MMHRC is the most preferred center for diabetes management, not only in the region but across the country. India has the dubious title of being the diabetes capital of the world, with one out of five Indians living with the disease. Over 40 million Indians today encounter many complications of diabetes like hypertension, high cholesterol, and lingering infections. In such a scenario the department, run by experienced doctors, provides world-class care at affordable costs. We ensure that the treatment given to our patients is holistic. We also focus on spreading awareness, early detection, monitoring, treatment, and management. The department also has several research publications to its credit, being involved in Phase III-IV clinical trials including Takeda SYR-322_402 and BI 1245.25
Diabetic Club:
The Diabetic Club was incepted in 2009 with the goal to spread awareness about diabetes and its management. It aims to create a network/support system for diabetic patients, to helps them manage their lifestyle better. Besides this, the Diabetic Club also conducts several awareness programs and classes. Over 540 enrolled members are regularly educated at the Club about the disease and its complications.
Special treatment options:
- Insulin pump therapy
- Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGMS)

Patient Care:
Chronic diabetes includes Type 1, Type 2, prediabetes and gestational diabetes. It is often seen that unmanaged and uncontrolled diabetes leads to morbid illnesses such as retinopathy, kidney failure, heart disease/stroke, gangrene, and neuropathy.
MMHRC’s Department of Diabetology offers both inpatient and outpatient care for diabetics at three levels:
Primary Care:
- Diabetes screenings are conducted for patients and high-risk groups (eg.: people with a family history of diabetes, obesity, sedentary lifestyle and so on).
Secondary Care:
- Diabetics are treated and monitored to prevent longstanding or uncontrolled diabetic complications.
Checkups include:
- Fundus photographs
- Heart check-ups
- Peripheral vascular screening
- Tests for microalbumin
- Urine PCR
- Nerve conduction study
- Autonomic nervous system study
Tertiary Care:
- The finest specialists manage and monitor cases of severe diabetic complications like chronic renal failure, proliferative retinopathy, erectile dysfunction and diabetic foot ulcers.
Charity:
The management of diabetes is most often an expensive affair, with the condition requiring treatment and management that is in most cases lifelong. This is why we have charitable schemes such as the Free Insulin Scheme to assist diabetics who cannot afford treatment. Several Type-1 patients have benefitted from the Free Insulin Scheme and the Novo Aid program.
