Meenakshi Mission to offer PG Diploma in Medical Law and Ethics

The one-year course is offered as a distance education programme.

The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, has tied up with the Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC), to launch a PG Diploma in Medical Law and Ethics here.

With the MoU signed on Saturday, the MMHRC will now be the second centre in the State after Christian Medical College, Vellore, to offer the programme by NLSIU as a long distance course. The one year PG Diploma course certified by NLSIU, is being offered as a distance education programme.

Speaking at the event, S. Gurushankar, Chairman of MMHRC, said that the course offered through distance learning would go a long way to increase an understanding of medical law and ethics. This would enable healthcare professionals from facing the challenges of the profession. He added that doctors have to keep themselves updated with the law. Prof. V. Nagaraj, Director of the Distance Education Department, NLSIU, said that the programme would provide an overview of medico-legal concepts and ethical issues in health-care and hoped that the programme would benefit the healthcare professionals.

Briefing the gathering on the course, Prof 0. V. Nandimath, Course Coordinator NLSIU, said that the PG Diploma would begin in July every year and would comprise five papers, including dissertation. Interested graduates from any discipline could enrol and there was no age restriction, he said.

Dr. Alexander Thomas, president, Association of Healthcare Providers (India), said that the collaboration between the academia and healthcare institutions was the need of the hour. Prof H. C. Arpitha delivered the vote of thanks.
