Meenakshi Mission Becomes First Hospital in India to Treat GFAP Astrocytopathy, a Rare Autoimmune Disease – MMHRC
March 10, 2025
GFAP astrocytopathy, first defined in 2016, can cause rapid changes in both physical and mental health. Diagnosing it is a challenge, as its symptoms mimic those of an array of infectious/inflammatory conditions of the brain and the spinal cord.
In a first in India, Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre, a leading multispecialty hospital in south Tamil Nadu, successfully treated a 31-year old female who was diagnosed with autoimmune GFAP astrocytopathy, a rare and recently-defined autoimmune disease that affects the functions of the brain and the spinal cord. Following a 10-day treatment given recently involving intravenous antibiotics and steroids, the patient had a complete cure and was discharged.
